We're Hiring: Part-Time Cook at Henry Hosea House

Every day at Henry Hosea House begins with the same question: What are we serving today?

It's a simple question with profound weight. Because for the people who walk through our doors at 901 York Street in Newport, that hot meal might be the only one they eat that day. It might be the first time someone speaks to them with kindness. It might be the moment that reminds them they still matter.

We're looking for a Part-Time Cook who understands that feeding people is about more than food.

This isn't a typical kitchen job. Yes, you'll prep vegetables, manage cook times, and portion plates. But you'll also be part of something bigger - a daily act of dignity and care that happens in our soup kitchen, where anyone can sit down to eat without judgment, without barriers, without cost.

The basics:

  • Hours: 20 hours per week

  • Schedule: 3 days per week, Monday through Friday

  • Shift window: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

  • Location: 901 York Street, Newport, KY 41071

To apply: COMPLETE THIS FORM AND UPLOAD YOUR RESUME.

A soup kitchen cook doesn't just follow recipes. You're managing a fast-paced operation where hot meals must be ready on time, every time. You're adjusting portions when more guests arrive than expected. You're maintaining food safety standards while working alongside volunteers who may or may not know their way around a commercial kitchen.

Some days you'll be chopping onions at 10 am. Other days you'll be plating 200 servings during dinner rush, making sure each person gets a complete, nourishing meal.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and cooking food for the daily hot meal service

  • Supporting safe food handling and proper portioning

  • Keeping the kitchen clean, organized, and service-ready

  • Working effectively with staff and volunteers during high-volume periods

Who We're Looking For

We need someone who can handle the heat - literally and figuratively.

You should have:

  • Cooking experience (professional or substantial home cooking background)

  • Flexibility to adapt in a fast-paced environment

  • Physical capability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds

  • A valid driver's license or reliable transportation

  • Food safety certification: You must possess or obtain the Certified Food Service Manager certification from the NKY Board of Health within 90 days of employment

More important than any credential? You need to care. About the food. About the people. About showing up consistently because others are counting on you.
